Update Video

Photo Video

I (Kathleen) wanted to share a bit more details for those who were interested in a newsletter. If you are looking for a quick recap, we have posted an update video as well as a video with some pictures from our trip and our first week and a half here in Thailand.

Our trip to Chiang Mai started on December 6th. I am very proud that I was able to pack everything in our allotted 8 bags. It the first time we didn’t need to pay for extra bags! Despite my minimal packing, the ticket agent seemed surprised by how many bags we had. “How long are you staying?!”, she said judgementally. It was a good question though as we actually don’t really know the answer! All in all the trip went well. Each destination held its own uniqueness. Our flight from Fredericton to Toronto was delayed and while we were waiting, a lady fainted in the departure lounge. Thankfully, she was fine and was able to board her flight. My thinking is she fainted when she saw the invoice for the price of her ticket (that was Graham’s joke). In Toronto we switched from flying Air Canada to Eva Air and had to recheck-in to get our boarding passes to fly to Taipei, Taiwan. The agent at Eva Air was very helpful and thankfully we didn’t have to recheck our bags. Our flight to Taiwan was also delayed (more on that later), but when we got on-board we realized we had tickets in premium economy. This meant bigger seats with more keg room for our 16 hour flight. Yay!

Our layover time in Taiwan was eaten up by the delay in Toronto. This meant we had to run to the gate to catch our next flight to Bangkok, Thailand or risk having to wait for the next flight. Graham was pushing the stroller with both boys and I was trying to run with our carry-ons. As luck would have it, I ended up falling. It wasn’t a nice fall either. It looked like I had fallen into a yard sale selling nothing but luggage. (another Graham joke) There was a guy driving one of those electric golf cart style cars nearby and he pulled up beside me when I fell. He explained that we could have asked for a lift and been driven to the gate. Information that would have been helpful before we ran 99% of the way to our gate. While we were on our flight from Taipei to Bangkok, there was a medical emergency and they asked over the PA system whether there was a doctor or nurse on-board. I offered to help but the situation had already been taken care of. We switched airlines again in Bangkok (from Eva Air to Bangkok Airways) so we needed to recheck-in to get our boarding passes for our last flight. Flying into Chiang Mai was beautiful. We had a perfect view of the nearby mountain range. Our bags were delayed due to our short layover. The agent in Chiang Mai notified us as soon as we arrived and had arranged for them to be brought on the next flight. The bags were even delivered for free to our home later that night!

The house we are renting is in a new development right across the street from Grace International School (GIS). The development is called “Graceland”. I guess Elvis faked his death and moved to Chiang Mai (another Graham joke). The house is a three bedroom townhouse which is enough space for our family. There has been a few issues with the house but the development office has been very good at getting those issues fixed. We were able to find his house through a “Business As Mission” (BAM)  allied Expat Homes. They along with SIM (our mission organization) blessed us by having all the basics setup in henhouse when we arrived, once we have the house completely setup we will do a video to show you all our living space. There are many families with children in our neighbourhood so they come by often to play. It is a huge blessing to have that for our boys.

We were able to attend a Thai church with some fellow SIM missionaries on our first Sunday. The church meets in the same building where Austin will attend Pre-School. Austin did very well attending Sunday School by himself and is excited to be starting Pre-School in January. He is such a social butterfly and looks forward to spending time with kids his own age.

We interviewed a lady to be Duncan’s nanny. She is well educated and seems very capable of doing a good job. Duncan was asleep when she stopped by so we asked if she would stop come back again this week to spend a day with us. We ask for prayer that things would work out well with her. It would be a huge blessing to have a great nanny for Duncan.

Unfortunately, both boys have been sick with colds since we’ve arrived. Hopefully they will be feeling better soon and that Graham and I would stay healthy.

We visited GIS and started to meet some of our colleagues. We have felt very warmly welcomed. We also started orientation with SIM. We are so glad to be part of such a great mission organization. They have helped us out so much in getting around and settled in. We start work at GIS on January 3rd.

We were able to check out some used car dealerships. Unfortunately, the cars were more expensive than we had hoped. However, the personnel coordinator for SIM is friends with the dealer we bought from and she told him to give us a good deal. Praise the Lord, the price he gave us was exactly what we hoped we would spend!

Well, that’s about all the news we have for now. Thank you to all of you who faithfully pray for us and support us financially. We could not be here without you. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Blessings,

Graham, Kathleen, Austin and Duncan Crawford

The Crawford Chronicles #18

The Crawford Chronicles #18

“Next Stop…Thailand!”

Prayer Requests

1) Visas - We finally have our visas! We received all four of our visas on Friday last week. Thank you for all who prayed.

2) Flights - We finally have airline tickets! Once our visas were issued we were able to start looking for airline tickets. We now have them. Lord willing we will be leaving New Brunswick on December 6th and arriving in Chiang Mai, Thailand on December 8th. Pray that all 4 of our flights go smoothly and that we will all handle the many hours of travel (and time changes) well.

3) Housing - We’ve been able to find a townhouse (duplex) to rent in Chiang Mai during our time here in Canada. It’s a brand new townhouse that is partially furnished so it should require less setup than a completely empty house. The rent is cheaper than we thought we would find so we are thankful to the Lord for directing us to it. It’s also very close to the school so our daily commute will be short.

4) Settling In - Please pray that we would settle well in our new home. Please pray that we would find a good pre-school for Austin. Pray that we will find a good nanny for Duncan. Pray that we would find a reliable car for a reasonable price. Pray that our house would feel like a home.

5) Finances - As we mentioned in our video, we still have a significant financial shortfall to make up, about $1000/month. Please be in prayer that we would find cheerful givers to join our support team. We are so grateful for those who have partnered with us already. We know we can’t do what we are doing without you.

Blessings,

Graham, Kathleen, Austin and Duncan Crawford

“Final Days”

October 8, 2022

Prayer Requests

1) Departure - Our time in Senegal will come to an end on Oct 11th. We will be arriving in Fredericton, New Brunswick on the 12th. Pray that we have good last moments with friends here.

2) Flight to Canada - Pray for us as we will be flying with a 3 year old and a 1 year old. Pray that everyone gets some sleep and that each flight goes smoothly. Pray our luggage arrives with us.

3) Time in Canada - We plan to stay in Canada until our Thai visas are processed. Hopefully this process will take 3-4 weeks. During this time we plan to visit churches, supporters, friends and family. Pray that we will make the most out of the short time we have.

4) Transition - Please pray for all of us as we transition into life in Thailand. Pray especially for the boys. Pray that we’d find a good pre-school for Austin and he would enjoy it there and make lots of friends. Pray that the helper we get for Duncan would speak English and that Duncan would enjoy her.

5) Finances - We are currently about $1000/month short of our support goal. Pray that we would be able to find people willing to partner with us in our ministry in Thailand.

6) Logistics - Pray that we would be able to find housing, a car and household items to help get us established in Chiang Mai. Pray we would find these things at reasonable prices.

7) New Positions - Please pray for Kathleen and I (Graham) as we transition into our new roles at Grace International School. Kathleen will be the Health Services Director and I will be the IT Director. Pray for us as we provide leadership to the school.

The Crawford Chronicles #16

“You’re Going Where?”

September 17, 2022

Prayer Requests

1) Thailand?! - It’s true. We are moving to Chiang Mai, Thailand! Kathleen accepted the Health Services Director position at Grace International School. After searching for nursing positions here in Dakar she was unable to find anything that suited her. So, she began looking internationally and found the position on their website. After applying and interviewing for the position, they offered her the job. Things moved much quicker than we were expecting but we are very excited for the opportunity to serve in Thailand.

2) Graham’s ministry in Thailand - When Kathleen began looking at the possibility of serving in Thailand, I (Graham) wondered what I would do if we moved there. The Lord has shown us two excellent possibilities. When Kathleen was in the process of applying for her position, Grace International School notified us that their IT Director would be resigning at the end of the year. I’ve applied for the position and had my interview this week. We are just waiting to hear back. If the IT Director position doesn’t work out, SIM has some great ministries there in Thailand that I could be a part of. Firstly, I would have to learn the local language, Thai so I would begin doing that for at least the first year we are there. Then once I have a working knowledge of the language I can begin ministry among the local people. Please pray the Lord would lead me to the ministry he has for me in Thailand!

3) The boys - Please pray for the boys as they transition to a new field. Especially for Austin. My prayer for him is that we will find him a good Pre-school to be a part of. He has really loved Pre-school at Dakar Academy and I feel bad about taking him out of his class. We have already found some good schooling options in Chiang Mai so pray that Austin would find a good place to grow and make friends and that Duncan would respond well to his new aunty.

4) Finances - Since we will be losing the stipend we receive from Dakar Academy we estimate we will have a support shortfall of about $1000/month. Please prayer for cheerful givers to partner with us in our ministry in Thailand.

5) Visas - We have begun the process of applying for Visas in Thailand. My visa will depend on the results of my application with Grace International School. Pray that we would find out the results of their IT Director search soon so we can finish applying for our visas.

6) Travel - We would appreciate prayer as we try to figure out the logistics of departing Senegal and arriving in Thailand. We plan to leave Senegal next month. We are debating about whether we should fly to Canada first to meet with friends, family and supporting churches before departing for Thailand. The other option is to leave Senegal and travel directly to Thailand. Prayer for wisdom as there are advantages and disadvantages in each option.

“90’s Edition”

June 11, 2022

Greetings everyone!  We’ve been working on a special video for you all and I’m happy to announce that it’s finally done! We hope you enjoy it and that it gives you a little glimpse into what life is like for us here in Dakar. Special thanks to Caitlin Woodward for filming and putting the video together. Apologies to those who aren’t familiar with 90’s TV theme songs. We tried to do a parody of songs people would know and this was our best idea. It was also really fun to make! So without further ado, I give you the greatest parody/support video of all time!

Blessings,

Graham, Kathleen, Austin and Duncan Crawford

“That’s a Wrap!”

June 5, 2022

Prayer Requests

1)  New IT Director - Thank you to those that have been praying that I wouldn’t be alone in the IT Department next year. Our prayers have been answered! Dakar Academy has officially hired a new IT Director that should be arriving in July. Pray that we would work well together as we serve our campuses and co-ops.

2)  Kathleen’s Ministry - We have been thankful for the role that Kathleen has been able to do as Sports Nurse for the school. This has helped her continue to accumulate hours towards her nursing license. Kathleen would like to be involved more with her nursing skills here so she has reached out to some contacts to see what she can do. Pray for clarity as to what Kathleen should be doing as her ministry here.

3)  New Accommodation - Kathleen and I began looking to see if there would be alternate accommodation available for next school year. We have succeeded in finding accommodation for next year. A missionary family is going on furlough for a year are are allowing us to take care of their house. This will give the boys alot more room to play (there is even a yard!). We praise the Lord for this unexpected blessing.

4)  Health - The Kathleen and the boys have struggled with colds and congestion during the dry season. There is alot of dust in the air and sickness is common during this season. Pray that they would be feeling better soon.

5)  Preschool - Austin will be starting Preschool in August! He is very excited for this new chapter in his life. Pray that he would make good friendships quickly.
